Basket Vendor - Posada Barrancas 1

We took an 8 day trip to the Copper Canyon region. It is a remote area that has only been accessible since the 1960's when a railway was finally completed between Los Mochis in the west and Chihuahua in the east. The train winds its way through rugged canyon country and the views are spectacular. To get to the train, we took a bus from Mazatlán to Los Mochis and then another bus to El Fuerte where we spent the night. The next morning we took the train to Creel and stayed there two days. From there we hired a van to drive us to Batopilas along 75km of paved road and then an unpaved and rugged road down into the canyon. The road was narrow and twisty with steep drop offs on the side. It was slow going and took about 4 hours to go just 65km on the dirt portion of the road.

In the canyon live the Raramuri indians. They are also known as the Tarahumara by the anthropologists that studied them. They live pretty-much as they always have. Most are farmers and many sell baskets and other crafts to the tourists.
