Panajachel sits along the shore of Lago de Atitlán in Guatemala's most dramatic region. The traditional values and customs of Guatemala's indigenous peoples are strongest in the highlands where Mayan dialects are the primary language. Lago de Atitlán is a caldera (collapsed volcanic cone) filled with deep cold water. Three volcanos dominate its landscape.
