Panajachel is one of Guatemala's oldest tourist hangouts. During the 1960's and 70's it was crowded with laid-back travelers in semi-permanent exile. A civil war caused them to move on, but the tourist industry is now booming again. However, surrounding Lago de Atitlán are twelve small villages, named for the Apostles. Many indigenous people live in those villages and come to Panajachel by boat each day to sell their weavings and artwork.
