Antigua is nestled between three volcanos and is one of the oldest cities in the Americas. It has cobblestone streets, crumbling ruins, and bougainvillea bursting from terra cotta roofs. The city was founded in 1543 and served as the colonial capital for 233 years. However, Antigua is plagued with frequent earthquakes and in 1776 the capital was moved to Guatemala City after the city was mostly destroyed in 1773.
