Casa Popenoe is a beautiful mansion built in 1636. It was ruined in the 1773 earthquake and stood desolate until purchased in 1931 by Dr. Wilson and Dorothy Popenoe. Their painstaking and authentic restoration shows how an Antiguan royal official's family lived in the 17th century. The house is now owned by their daughters who continue to live there and open the house for visitors for a few hours each day. This photo shows laundry wash basins behind the house in a nearby garden.
